One of the first things we knew we had to address on our OVR G63 project vehicle was the ride quality.

While the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG is a beast on paper with its 563 horsepower and aggressive street-tuned suspension, that same stiffness translates to a jarring experience on the road—and an even rougher one off pavement.

For a build that needs to balance daily driving with trail capability, we needed a solution that would tone things down without sacrificing the character of the vehicle. That’s where Jack Wagon Overlanding’s Factory Ride Height Coil Springs came into play.

Jack Wagon offers a full range of suspension springs for the W460, W461, and W463 G-Wagon platforms—including 2-inch and 4-inch lift versions built specifically to carry heavy loads and take on serious terrain. But for our needs, the factory-height option was ideal.

Keeping It Garagable

We chose to stay at factory height to maintain easy access to parking garages and ensure the G-Wagon still fit comfortably in a standard residential garage. It also helps keep the vehicle’s center of gravity lower for better on-road handling, which is important for a daily-driven SUV.

We weren’t trying to turn the OVR G63 into a tall, top-heavy expedition rig that would no longer fit in a residential garage. We needed better street compliance, improved off-road manners, and no complications.

Beyond AMG

Jack Wagon’s factory height springs are designed as a high-quality refresh to the stock setup. They retain original ride height but offer improved comfort, stability, and support.

Jack Wagon springs are finished in an attracive German grey and feature clear markings that include a product identifier code and Jack Wagon logo.

Compared to the original AMG-tuned suspension, these springs feel noticeably more forgiving—especially over uneven pavement and trail obstacles—while still preserving the firm and composed ride you expect from a Mercedes-Benz. If you’ve ever driven a G550, that’s the closest ride comparison we can make.

When paired with our FOX Performance Series 2.0 Smooth Body Reservoir Shocks, the new spring and shock combo dramatically improved the way our G handles both highway cruising and moderate trail runs.

From sandy washes to rocky fire roads, the suspension now responds with better control and less harshness. Importantly, because we stayed at factory height, we avoided the extra cost and complexity of lift-specific components like longer brake lines or caster correction bushings. That leaves more room in the budget for future upgrades.

Installed

We had the springs installed at RPM Off-Road Garage, a trusted shop that’s handled several upgrades on the OVR G63 so far. The installation process went smoothly, with no unexpected issues or modifications needed—just a straightforward swap that had the G back on the road the same day.

A Little Help

For G-Wagon owners building heavier rigs, Jack Wagon also offers a solution. Their 40mm rear coil spacers can help level out rear-end sag under heavy cargo or added accessories.

And for those looking for a more subtle fix, a 15mm leveling spacer is ideal for light to moderate weight additions like drawer systems or rooftop tents.

Need A Lift?

For those looking to give their G-Wagon more ground clearance for technical trails or added load capacity, Jack Wagon Overlanding also offers 2-inch and 4-inch lift spring options. These lift springs are engineered with increased support and stability in mind, making them ideal for builds that include roof racks, drawer systems, rooftop tents, or other heavy gear.

While they do require additional components like extended brake lines and caster correction parts, they offer a great path for turning your G into a more capable overland rig ready for serious off-road use.

Final Thoughts

After several weekend trips and weeks of commuting in the city, we’re happy with the direction the OVR G63 is headed. Jack Wagon Overlanding’s springs helped transform this AMG-tuned SUV into something far more livable for the kind of dual-purpose driving we built it for.

More comfortable. More capable. Still unmistakably a G.
