RC builder Neil Leyesa has crafted an extraordinary 1/10-scale replica of Expedition Overland’s iconic 5th Gen 4Runner. Featuring hand-built steel bumpers, a functioning Alucab rooftop tent, and a scratch-built Patriot Camper X3 trailer, this miniature masterpiece demonstrates what dedication and attention to detail can achieve in the world of scale RC vehicles.

Scaler is all about scale replicas of our favorite overland and off-road vehicles. In most cases, these radio-control (RC) mini-me’s are original builds that are made to scale miniature trails. In some cases, the RC trucks are scaled-down detailed replicas of actual rigs.

We’ve been following Neil Leyesa of Bonards Garage for some time now. He is known for his custom-built, impressively exacting scale replica RC vehicles that are built to mimic full-scale trucks in almost every detail.

His latest creation is a miniaturized clone of Expedition Overland’s 5th Gen 4Runner, affectionately known as “The Clone.” (Pun intended.)

Inspired by the famed Expedition Overland 4Runner, Neil’s creation is a testament to both his passion for RC vehicles and his dedication to detail. Neil’s journey in the 4x4 scale scene began back in 2008.

Over the years, he has amassed a collection of parts and accumulated a wealth of experience, all of which culminated in this remarkable project.

Before embarking on the build, Neil reached out to the Expedition Overland team to discuss his plan to replicate their truck. The team was incredibly supportive, giving Neil the green light to proceed. This collaboration set the stage for a project that would push the boundaries of scale accuracy.

The heart of this replica is a 3D printed 5th Gen 4Runner body from mfab4x4, painted with Tamiya paints in matte black and matte white.

The chassis is sourced from an Axial SCX10, while the front independent suspension (IFS) is from a vintage Kyosho RC kit from the 1990s.

The front differential comes from an HPI RS4 Nitro, and the rear diff is a Yota2 axle from RC4WD. Additionally, the transmission, transfer case, and drive shafts are all RC4WD parts, ensuring robust performance and reliability.

Neil’s attention to detail extends to the suspension system. The rear suspension is an accurate replica of the real 4Runner’s setup, featuring a 4-link design with a panhard bar, separate coils, and shocks. The front and rear bumpers, crafted from 22-gauge steel, are hand-built to mimic CBI Offroad bumpers.

The rock sliders are made from 3/16” brake line and are brazed and bolted to the chassis, providing real protection and enhancing the truck’s rugged appearance. Full steel skid plates, also made from 22-gauge steel, safeguard the undercarriage from damage just like with the real 4Runner.

Inside the vehicle, Neil added a 3D printed interior from Knight Customs, further enhancing the scale realism.

Incredibly, the Alucab rooftop tent is a scratch-built from styrene plastic and features functional dollhouse hinges and homemade latches that allow it to open and close like the real thing. The tent’s interior is complete with tenth-scale mattress, blankets and pillows too, all sewn together by Neil.

Inspired by Expedition Overland’s Nordic series, Neil decided to add a Patriot Camper X3 trailer to his setup. The trailer, also scratch-built from styrene plastic, boasts a custom independent suspension with coilovers, ensuring smooth towing over rough terrain.

To complete the ensemble, Neil added a 3D printed inflatable boat on top of the X3 trailer, just like the Expedition Overland setup seen in their Alaska series of videos.

Neil’s craftsmanship and dedication have resulted in a scale model that not only looks incredible but performs exceptionally well. “I’m very happy with this build,” Neil says. “It performs well wherever I run it, and the body is well protected by steel bumpers and sliders.”

For Neil and many like him, scale building is more than just a hobby—it’s a passion. His 1/10-scale “clone” of Expedition Overland’s The Clone 4Runner is a testament to what can be achieved with patience, skill, and a love for detail.
