For the second time this season, OVR and Hankook Tire partnered to put a group of overlanders on the road together — running the historic Applegate-Lassen Trail from the Nevada desert to Overland Expo PNW, where education, community, and a few hard-earned trail lessons rounded out an unforgettable experience.

Hankook Tire’s CAMP Dynapro Hosts Group Camp Experience at Overland Expo PNW in Redmond, Oregon After an Overland Adventure

For the second time this season, OVR and Hankook Tire brought overlanding enthusiasts together for multiple days of overlanding, education, and adventure. Starting at a Hipcamp near Gerlach, NV, the group took roads and trails to the Hankook CAMP Dynapro at Overland Expo PNW held in Redmond, OR June 26–28.

The Road to Overland Expo PNW

With Overland Expo PNW as the destination, 10 rigs got ready to make the journey from a Hipcamp in the Nevada desert near Gerlach, to Redmond, Oregon as part of the Hankook CAMP Dynapro experience.

Some on the trip were seasoned off-roaders, others were hitting trails for the first time. But the idea behind this trip would be to pair on-trail education with the excitement of overland travel whether you were a seasoned overlander, or someone new to this type of travel.

Much of the trips was on the Applegate-Lassen Trail through Nevada, Northern California, and Southern Oregon. Top priorities? Fun, adventure, education, and safety.

Day one offered introductions, and a playa run through the Black Rock Desert to a local hot spring. One rig got stuck requiring a kinetic rope recovery, but a successful recovery was made and created a great educational moment now how to use kinetic recovery ropes.

After getting stuck and unstuck, the group continued to explore the area until setting up basecamp for the night.

On the second day, participants transited to Soldier Meadows in the far northwest corner of Nevada. Pronghorn and wild horses could be seen, and the temps reached a scorching 106°F.

Travel in this kind of heat requires special precautions, and there was plenty of discussion on how to keep cool and healthy in the heat.

Day three’s route wound its way towards Oregon’s high desert. During the drive, an OVR rig slipped off a trail’s soft shoulder—a reminder of how staying alert on the trail is crucial. Thankfully, it was a simple, educational recovery, and everyone continued unscathed.

Later, the group reached a water crossing, amping up the adventure. The water was deep enough to necessitate spotters for some of the bigger rigs, like the Ford F-350. However, all the rigs made it through.

Along the route, the group saw evidence of the historic Applegate Trail from 1846. This historic route was intended to be a safer alternative to the Oregon Trail to reach the Oregon Territory. Overlanding often showcases scenery and history, too.

The group reached Redmond, OR where everyone washed their rigs and headed to the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center. Here, they’d check into CAMP Dynapro, get camp setup up, and settle in for a few days at Overland Expo PNW. But CAMP Dynapro was far from over.

Fireside Chats

Hankook’s commitment to education continued at CAMP Dynapro with two evening fireside chats.

The first of fireside chat featured Todd Rodgers of overland guide company, Four Points Adventures. He’s the owner, an accomplished guide, search and rescue expert, and has been all over the globe. Todd recapped the OVR/Hankook trip, discussing ins and outs of the Applegate-Lassen Trail, lessons learned on the adventure, and preparing vehicles for multi-day excursions.

“The pre-run trip was a fun way to get together with other overlanders of various skill levels and have some fun, maybe learn a few things, and maybe figure out what you might want to look at when you get to the Overland Expo,” said Todd.

Todd is a believer in CAMP Dynapro’s fireside chats. He said, “The fireside chats are a comfortable, easy way to ask questions and get answers from some very experienced folks. They cover a wide variety of topics and allow for flexibility in the direction of the conversation.”

The second fireside chat included myself and fellow OVR Feature Editor (and my wife), Mercedes Lilienthal. Here, we covered the topic “What Do You Do When Your Trip Doesn’t Go According To Plan?”

We discussed challenes we experienced in 2025 when we ran the TransAmerica Trail in a 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness. Topics included weather hardship, temperamental terrain, vehicle issues, and how to deal withs relationships while traveling.

community

“Participating in the Hankook Dynapro fireside chats is a great way to talk to other people about off-roading, travel, our experiences about various adventures, and related challenges we’ve had with them. We love to share stories of where we’ve been and what we’ve done in hopes of inspiring others to get out there and experience the world around them,” said Mercedes.

“Exploring the Black Rock Desert with Hankook Tire USA and OVR proved that the best overland adventures are all about the community. Swapping stories and learning moments around the fireside chats created such a cool bond,” said CAMP Dynapro participant, CJ Camara who’s also the Founder and Moderator for @ForesterCulture. “Even though I was learning a ton out on the trails, my street car background made it way easier to adapt to the dirt. It really proved that the AWD Chaos was able to hold its own in the group of 4WD vehicles.”

I personally have been inspired by conversations at Overland Expo events and seminars, and it’s awesome to give back to the community by sharing what inspired us.

Hankook hosted showgoers at CAMP Dynapro for camping, education, and off-road adventure. Each day, the brand provided breakfast and dinner for CAMP Dynapro participants, and happy hours for folks to mingle, share stories, and to get to know one another creating a great community.

Kim Young-Woo, Director, North America Marking Communications, Hankook Tire, said, “CAMP Dynapro was created to build genuine, long-term relationships with people who truly live the off-road and overlanding lifestyle.

“For us, it is not just about showing products—it is about listening to real stories, sharing experiences together, and creating a space where the brand can connect with the community in a more authentic way,” Kim said. “We believe trust is built through real-world experiences, honest conversations, and a shared passion for the journey, not through one-time marketing moments.”

Kim continued, “Through CAMP Dynapro, Hankook hopes to keep growing that connection, learn directly from the community, and become a brand that is not only seen in the off-road space, but genuinely respected and supported within it.”

Hankook Sales Representative, Kaitlyn Granville, was at CAMP Dynapro at Overland Expo PNW and said, “Being at CAMP Dynapro and meeting everyone in person was honestly one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had as someone in tire sales.

As a sales team, we often talk about products, fitments, and performance, but this gave us the opportunity to hear directly from the people who are actually using our tires in the real world,” said Kaitlyn.

She continued, “Listening to their stories, understanding how they build their vehicles, where they travel, what concerns they have, and what they expect from a tire gave us a much deeper perspective than data alone ever could.

What made it so impactful was that it was not just a brand talking to consumers — it was a real, two-way conversation with people who truly live the off-road and overlanding lifestyle.

“For me, CAMP Dynapro also showed what it means for Hankook to be more than a corporate brand,” Kaitlyn remarked. “We may be a top global tire company, but opportunities like this allow people to see the real people behind the brand — people who genuinely care about safety, trust, and helping drivers stay engaged in the adventures they love.”

Kaitlyn said it was really powerful to see how their product can help bring people together and support the kind of experiences that make the overlanding community so special. “Through CAMP Dynapro, we hope to keep building those relationships, learning from the community, and earning trust in a genuine way,” she said.
