Ignik Skullet Review: The 2-in-1 Camp Stove and Propane Fire Pit Hybrid

If you’re looking to streamline your camp kitchen without sacrificing a fire pit—especially in fire-ban country—the Ignik Skullet’s clever 2-in-1 design delivers on both fronts and earns its place in the truck.

I love finding products that genuinely solve a problem, and the Ignik Skullet is one of those rare pieces of gear.

For the past few years I’ve done nearly all of my camp cooking on a traditional skottle. The simplicity is hard to beat—you cook directly on the large steel pan, eliminating the need to pack multiple pots and pans, and when dinner’s ready you can even gather around and eat right off the cooking surface.

A few months ago, though, I came across the Ignik Skullet, and what immediately caught my attention was its ability to serve two purposes.

What Makes the Ignik Skullet Different?

Unlike a traditional skottle, the Ignik Skullet doubles as both a camp stove and a propane fire pit.

That versatility is especially valuable where I live in Colorado, where permanent fire restrictions mean wood campfires often aren’t an option.

Similar fire bans are common throughout much of the western United States during the warmer months, making a portable propane fire pit an increasingly practical piece of camping gear.

You can purchase the Skullet by itself as a fire pit or choose the Deluxe Cookset, which includes the cast-iron skillet and adjustable legs.

Since I’m always looking for ways to simplify my camp setup, replacing two separate pieces of equipment with one made a lot of sense.

How the Ignik Skullet Performs in the Field

The first time I cooked with the Skullet, Colorado’s weather gave it a proper test. Strong winds had me wondering whether the burner, which sits farther below the skillet than my previous skottle, would produce enough heat to cook ribeye steaks and vegetables.

Fortunately, that concern disappeared quickly.

The Skullet funnels heat efficiently toward the cooking surface, keeping the cast-iron skillet hot even in gusty conditions.

My previous skottle positioned the flame much closer to the pan and relied on a dedicated wind guard, but Ignik’s design proved every bit as capable.

The cast-iron lid is what makes the system unique. Flip it open while cooking and the burner directs heat straight into the skillet.

Close it again, and the Skullet functions as a propane fire pit by redirecting heat out the sides. You can use it directly on the ground or install the adjustable legs for comfortable standing-height cooking.

What We Like About the Ignik Skullet

Versatility is unquestionably the Skullet’s biggest strength.

Not only can it function as both a camp stove and a fire pit, but it also works with other cookware. If you want coffee in the morning, simply set a kettle on top. Making soup or stew? Drop on a larger pot instead of the skillet.

The Skullet also packs down surprisingly small and includes a sturdy carry handle, making it easy to reposition even after it’s been in use.

A 5-foot propane regulator hose is included and connects to most standard propane tanks, while the all-metal construction gives confidence that it’ll withstand years of camping trips.

What Could Be Improved

I found two areas where the Skullet could be even better.

The first is the lack of a dedicated lid for the cast-iron skillet. My previous skottle included one, and it made a noticeable difference when steaming vegetables or reducing grease splatter while cooking foods like bacon.

There are aftermarket domed lids that work, but having one designed specifically for the Skullet would be a worthwhile accessory.

The second issue is storage after cooking. Ignik is reportedly developing a carrying solution, but currently there isn’t one available.

The bottom of the skillet and the top of the Skullet accumulate a fair amount of soot after use. I found that a Morrflate air-hose storage bag happened to fit the skillet perfectly while leaving room for the hose and handle in its front pocket.

For the Skullet itself, I stored it inside a large 90-liter gear crate, which kept soot contained and prevented it from getting on the rest of my camping equipment.

Ignik Skullet Pricing

The Skullet Fire Pit starts at $399.95, while the Deluxe Skullet Cookset costs $499.95 and includes the cast-iron skillet and adjustable legs.

In my opinion, the Deluxe Cookset offers the better value. For an additional $100, you receive everything needed to use the Skullet as both a complete camp cooking system and a portable propane fire pit.

Final Verdict: Is the Ignik Skullet Worth It?

After preparing more than 20 meals on the Skullet and using it as a fire pit roughly half that many times, it’s become one of my favorite pieces of camping gear this year.

More importantly, it allowed me to eliminate an extra piece of equipment from my truck while adding functionality at the same time.

If you’re shopping for a camp stove, a propane fire pit, or simply looking to simplify your overland kitchen, the Ignik Skullet is an easy recommendation.

The combination of thoughtful design, excellent cooking performance, and genuine versatility makes it one of the more useful pieces of camp cooking gear I’ve tested.
