Leitner Designs reveals Active Cargo System (ACS) ROOF for 2024-present Toyota Tacoma. ACS ROOF is the most durable platform rack on the market for fourth-generation Tacoma, boasting load ratings of 1,000 pounds static, 600 lb. on road, and 300 lb. off road.
These load figures aren’t theoretical estimates; Leitner Designs validated them in the field, subjecting the ACS ROOF to a strenuous 1,000-mile high-speed desert off-road durability test loop that includes Johnson Valley and the Mojave Road in southern California.
Leitner Designs ACS ROOF is unique in the segment because of its infinitely adjustable load bars. Unlike traditional platform racks, the structural rigidity of ACS ROOF comes from its exterior frame, not the load bars.
This enables the rack to hold heavy gear and withstand unrelenting abuse for years on end. Plus, thanks to this externally structured design, owners can add as many or as few load bars as they like — even when ACS ROOF is installed on their Tacoma.
“There’s off road then there’s SoCal off road. The difference between those is speed and g force,” said Leitner Designs Founder and Chief Designer Bernhard Leitner. “We torture test our racks at full throttle in some of the harshest off-road conditions in the world. I challenge any other roof-rack maker to join us on our test route to see if their racks can hold up.”
The Leitner Designs ACS ROOF load bars are held in place using four M8 grade 10.9 high-strength fasters in a tensile load configuration. All fasteners are inherently much stronger in tensile strength than sheer force.
Tensile strength is the force required to pull the fastener apart. In many applications, fasteners also receive some sheer force, which is the force trying to cut it apart like a pair of scissors would paper.
With Leitner Designs’ unique and patent-pending fastener configuration, all fasters on ACS ROOF are in a tensile load configuration, avoiding all sheer loads that could cause the rack to fail.
Most other roof rack companies use much smaller M6 fasteners in a sheer configuration. For context, a fastener is only 50%-60% as strong in sheer as in tensile, making the Leitner rack the true leader in strength and long term durability.
If Tacoma owners want to make the most of their rooftop storage, they can add GearPOD ROOF, Leitner Designs’ take on a rooftop storage box. The GearPOD ROOF opens from the side, unlike traditional rooftop storage boxes that open from the top.
This first-ever design feature not only improves accessibility but also creates additional storage space — the top of the box. The GearPOD ROOF can hold up to 100 pounds of gear on its top, ideal for MAXTRAX or RotopaX.
ACS ROOF
With the turn of a few Leitner-branded torx bolts, owners can slide the load bars in a multitude of arrangements, front to rear, thanks to the patented mounting system. ACS ROOF has toothed channels that run the exterior of the rack rather than bolts that run through the exterior frame in a fixed position. The load bars clamp to these toothed channels, creating an adjustable but incredibly secure mounting solution.
In addition to being fully adjustable along the length of the rack, ACS ROOF load bars are twice as wide and twice as strong as the competition; each ACS ROOF load bar is 4.0 inches wide and 1.2 inches tall and features two T-slots (most platform racks feature just one t-slot).
The load bars are formed from 1.5mm to 3.0mm multi-wall thickness aluminum — more than twice as thick as other platform racks on the market.
Securely mounting and wiring rooftop accessories, like auxiliary lighting, is easier and cleaner than ever with ACS ROOF. Unlike traditional platform racks, which force users to attach wiring to the rack externally, ACS ROOF’s corner caps can be removed while the rack is installed.
The corner caps feature passthrough holes that allow users to run wiring along the inside of the exterior extrusion rails. Running wiring inside the extrusion protects the wiring and eliminates the need for unsightly zip ties.
Leitner Designs also created a version of the platform rack compatible with the brand’s ACS Forged bed racks, called ACS Platform. It’s compatible with all of Leitner Designs’ ACS Forged bed racks and replaces the standard top rails. ACS Platform both lowers the overall height of the ACS Forged (compared to running an auxiliary rack atop the load bars) and increases overall structural rigidity something racks from other manufacturers can’t.
ACS ROOF for 2024+ Toyota Tacoma is priced at $1,300. Tacoma owners can find out more about ACS ROOF by clicking here.
