Mammoth Overland, subsidiary of Vashion Aircraft, reveals SKL (i.e. “Skull”), the brand’s first rooftop camper concept.

Just don’t call it a rooftop tent; SKL is constructed entirely of painted high-strength aluminum, with zero tent material, and features a 208-Amp-hour battery pack in its roof.

Both rugged and energy-rich, the solar-ready SKL boasts a trailer-like R5 insulation rating and is capable of powering off-grid electronics inside and outside of the camper. The SKL concept is not a production unit. However, it represents a vision of what a rooftop camper from Mammoth Overland could look like.

Measuring 89 inches long, 59 inches wide, and 18 inches tall, SKL is as long as a king-size mattress and boasts an interior width in between a queen and a full, more than enough room for two adults to sleep comfortably.

Distinguishing it from rooftop tents and rooftop campers, SKL’s roof structure includes two solid-state Renogy 104-Amp-hour lithium-ion. Pre-wired for solar panels that can be attached to the 500-pound capacity roof rack, campers can charge the onboard batteries with solar or shore power.

“While our HV, ELE, TL, and WLY trailers have been wildly successful, we realized that not everyone has room to store an off-road trailer at their home. We wondered, ‘what if a trailer and rooftop tent had a baby?’ SKL was born,” said Mammoth Overland President Scott Taylor. “SKL takes the features that our customers love most about our trailers and moves them to the roof of their rig. What’s more, SKL is essentially a portable power station that you can sleep in.”

Traditional rooftop campers and tents sacrifice insulation. SKL doesn’t. It boasts an R5 insulation rating. To put that into perspective, the insulation of most campers is rated around R0. With its highly insulated, white-painted aluminum structure, the SKL naturally keeps campers comfortable in any season.

However, should campers desire more airflow, a roof-mounted three-speed electric fan can operate to blow inward or outward. Interior lighting is provided by built-in porthole windows, three on each side of SKL, as well as dual interior light strips.

Two auxiliary flood lights are mounted to either side of the camper for trail and campsite illumination. All lights are powered by the onboard battery pack.

Mammoth Overland SKL rooftop camper will make its public debut at Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona May 16-18, 2025 at the Mammoth Overland booth L26.

Mammoth Overland will debut the production SKL rooftop camper later in 2025 and will provide final specifications and pricing at that time. In the meantime, customers can learn more about Mammoth Overland’s offerings on its website: https://mammothoverland.com/.
