Growing up, Yakima was the name everyone knew—like Kleenex for tissues, it was just what you called a bike tray.
Since childhood, my family’s SUV has dawned old school Coors Classic Yakima trays, paying homage to the legendary multi-stage road cycling race in the U.S. Hauling road and mountain bikes to South Lake Tahoe every summer, the brand defined my views of the cycling world.
Over the years, Yakima has continued to evolve with the specific needs of outdoor enthusiasts. What started with bike trays has grown into a full ecosystem of adventure and overlanding gear.
Now, Yakima has unveiled their first-ever hardshell rooftop tent, the all-new SkyPeak HD. Retailing for $3,499.00, the SkyPeak HD is 4-season rated and features a clamshell wedge design with an additional expansion popout for increased interior space. If you are familiar with Freespirit Recreation’s Alpen Series, this tent structure features similar geometry.
The exterior of the tent features integrated tent-side T-slots for gear attachments up to 75 lbs each side–perfect for mounting any of Yakima’s newest OverNOut Awnings. There are a handful of accessories compatible with the SkyPeak HD RTT that can be purchased separately:
The SkyPeak HD Annex, additional Clamp Set, Crossbar Kit, and a RoadShower/Awning Bracket Kit. Most notably, the additional crossbar kit has a closed tent load capacity of 165 lbs with an open tent load capacity of 75 lbs. With external gear storage boxes making their way into everyone’s vehicle loadout, this is a no-brainer add-on if you are in the market.
The SkyPeak HD tent has three access doors and dual zippered passthrough slots for climate control, power, or other accessories. Enter the tent with a collapsible ladder and Yakima’s extra wide “barefoot friendly” ergonomic angled steps.
Inside the tent are dimmable USB-A powered white and amber interior lights. Interior electronics and gear pockets help keep the space organized. The sleeping area consists of a premium memory foam mattress with a removable cover and an anti-condensation mat.
Further bolstering Yakima’s overlanding product ecosystem, the all-new RTT is compatible with Yakima’s popular OutPost HD and OverHaul HD towers. The bottom of the tent features two perpendicular protruding T-slot channels, which are utilized in the mounting process using the included crossbar clamps.
If you are wanting to make your life infinitely easier with installation and future removal and maintenance, consider purchasing Front Runner’s Quick Release Tent Mount Kit, depending on your bed rack compatibility and load capacity. After running these on my latest overlanding set-up, I can never go back.
