When every message matters on remote trails, equipment reliability becomes critical. We put Midland’s latest GMRS communication accessories to the test in challenging desert terrain to see if they deliver on their promise of clearer transmission and improved audio quality.

If you’ve ever missed a key message on the trail due to static, distance, or wind noise, we feel your pain.

That’s why we recently outfitted our OVR Land Cruiser 100 with two new GMRS communication accessories from Midland: the Highland 3dB Gain Heavy-Duty Bull Bar Antenna System and the Mini External Speaker (SPKMINI).

The Highland antenna mounted perfectly to the Ironman 4x4 bull bar’s built-in antenna tab.

Both items are part of Midland’s Explorer Trail Kits, which bundle either a 15-watt or 50-watt GMRS radio with the antenna and speaker. Since our rig already runs Midland’s top-tier MXT575 50-watt radio, we simply added the new antenna and speaker to our existing setup.

To test an alternate location, we mounted the Highland antenna on the rear fuel can carrier using Midland’s Roll Bar/Mirror Mount Bracket.

We mounted the Highland antenna up front using the built-in tab on our Ironman 4x4 bull bar and also tested a rear setup using Midland’s Roll Bar/Mirror Mount Bracket.

On a recent trip through desert washes and rocky terrain with tall formations, we noticed significantly improved transmission clarity and range. Even as the convoy spread out, the Highland antenna kept our messages crisp and clear.

As for the Mini External Speaker, it’s been really helpful when windows are down or engine noise ramps up. Compact, weatherproof (IP67-rated), and surprisingly loud, it let us hear every call-in clearly—whether we were driving or back at basecamp.

The Mini External Speaker can be mounted almost anywhere thanks to its small size and weatherproof design.
