For three years we focused on exterior upgrades for our 2021 Ford Bronco Non-Sasquatch Outer Banks, but a proper Bronco drawer storage system remained an afterthought. We made do with an assortment of plastic bins that shifted with every corner, forcing us to play real-life Tetris every time we packed for a trip. It worked—barely—but it was far from ideal.
We finally reached the point where we needed a proper Bronco drawer storage system that could keep up with how we actually use the vehicle. Enter Solid Wood Worx with their pre-cut Baltic Birch plywood drawer storage solution designed specifically for the 4-door Ford Bronco. Here’s what we learned after 100 days of real-world testing.

Rear Cargo Storage Solution for a 2021 Ford Bronco (4-Door, Non-Sasquatch)
For much of this build, our focus has been on the exterior of our 2021 Ford Bronco Outer Banks, (read about our complete Bronco build journey). Like many long-term projects, interior functionality—specifically rear cargo storage—lagged behind. Day-to-day gear was handled with plastic bins and loose cases, turning every trip into a game of Tetris.
Eventually, that approach stopped making sense. Between daily use, event travel, and family camping, the Bronco needed a purpose-built cargo solution that was secure and flexible enough to adapt as the vehicle’s role changed.

How We Use Our Bronco: Daily Driver to Overland Adventure Rig
The OVR Bronco is not a garage queen. It operates as a true multi‑role vehicle throughout the year. It regularly appears as a display vehicle at Overland Expo (See our Overland Expo coverage) events, supports SCORE International off‑road races such as the Baja 1000 and San Felipe 250 (Read about our Bronco suspension upgrades for off-road performance), and serves as a family camping rig for weekend and overnight trips.
Between events, it still needs to function as a daily hauler for tools, supplies, and general gear. This demanding use case required a cargo management solution that could transition easily between roles. For any Bronco owner who overlands, camps, or uses their vehicle for both recreation and work, a versatile drawer storage system is an essential need versus an option.
Evaluating Bronco Cargo Storage Solutions
Although there are many cargo systems on the market, few are designed with the realities of a 4‑door Bronco in mind. We were evaluating cargo organizers that balanced daily practicality with true off‑road durability, while remaining visually cohesive with the Bronco interior.
Storage capacity mattered, but not at the expense of noise control or structural rigidity. Expandability was important, as was the ability to transition into a sleeping platform without permanently eliminating one or both rear seats. The system needed to evolve with the vehicle, not limit it.

Solid Wood Worx Bronco Storage System: 100-Day Field Test
After extensive research, we selected the Solid Wood Worx storage system. At the time of writing, it has been installed and in regular use for more than 100 days.
The first meaningful test came quickly. Fully loaded, the Bronco was taken to Southern California’s Big Bear trail system. The route included slow, off‑camber articulation, uneven rock gardens, and stretches of high‑speed washboard. This real-world off-road storage test validated the system’s design across the demanding terrain Bronco owners will face.
Throughout the drive, we paid close attention for creaks, fastener movement, or any audible signs of stress. There Were None.

The system remained quiet and stable, even as the vehicle twisted and cycled through its suspension travel. That absence of noise became one of the most telling indicators of the system’s overall design quality.
Baltic Birch Construction and Design Features
The Solid Wood Worx drawer system is CNC‑cut from Baltic birch plywood, a material chosen for its strength, dimensional stability, and favorable weight characteristics compared to steel-based alternatives. Rather than relying on sheer mass for rigidity, the design emphasizes structural efficiency. This Baltic birch drawer system delivers strength without the penalty of steel-based cargo organizers.
For dimensions, the drawer system plus the side cubby is 29.75” front to back x 43” wide x 8” tall and the inner dimensions for the drawer system is 27.50” front to back x 28” wide x 6.10” tall. The optional 60:40 sleeping platform is 26.50” wide x 33” long and 16.50” wide x 33” long.

The signature hexagonal cut out pattern is not only decorative—it reduces unnecessary material, manages weight, and helps distribute load while maintaining stiffness across the platform and drawer faces. This modular storage system is finished in a durable black textured protective coating intended to resist moisture, humidity, and surface wear.
In real‑world use, the coating appears to serve a secondary purpose as well. By creating a slight barrier between adjoining surfaces, it dampens vibration and eliminates wood‑on‑wood contact, which likely contributes to the absence of squeaks or rattles during off‑road driving.
The result is a system that feels composed and deliberate, even when the chassis is working hard.
Areas for Improvement
Whether you’re building an overland Bronco or need a better truck camping storage, this system provides the foundation. As solid as the system is overall, there are a few areas where refinement would improve the experience. The side access panel that allows entry to the factory cubby space is convenient, but becomes a weak point when driving over rough terrain and can rattle if left unsecured.

Additionally, the optional sleeping platforms do not include integrated on-board storage when removed, which means they must be stored externally when not in use. Neither issue detracts significantly from the system’s performance, but both represent opportunities for future design updates.
Installing Bronco Drawer Storage
Installation falls squarely in the medium‑difficulty range for any IKEA DIY’er. While it can be completed at home with basic tools and patience, we chose professional installation so we could visit the Solid Wood Worx facility and meet the team behind the product.
